The Untamed, Episodes 36-40

This was equal parts hilarious hijinks and desperate tragedy, which i am starting to realise is just how this series rolls.


Episode 36

• Awww, Wei Wuxian taking care of drunk!Lan Wangji!


• Jfc, someone’s kept Wen Ning locked up with NAILS IN HIS HEAD and enslaved for 16 years??? And now he has to wake up and find out his sister’s dead? Why won’t someone give this sweet kid a break!


• YES THESE ARE THE HIJINKS I WANTED


• Nothing says ‘I love you’ like two angry, struggling roosters


• I wonder if the masked guy is the same one who played the flute during the Nightless City battle and screwed everything up


• I love that being completely plastered has absolutely no effect on Lan Wangji’s swordfighting skills


• Omg the kids playing are adorable


• Ahaha Wei Wuxian’s donkey has been making noise and causing havoc at Cloud Recesses in his absence! Good job, Apple.


• ”Congratulations, you got poisoned! You can boast about it later.” Wei Wuxian should always be in charge of baby cultivator field trips

Episode 37

• Ahahaha Wei Wuxian’s cooking! He should definitely be in charge of every field trip, this is amazing


• There is something about the baby cultivators getting to see Wei Wuxian at work that is immensely appealing to me


• I can’t remember if this is Ghostbuster Ray or Fraser, but either way, oh no!


• It’s cool to see the difference in how Lan Sizhui uses the guqin to communicate with a spirit as a student versus how Lan Wangji does it as an expert


• Awwww Lan Sizhui feels safe around Wei Wuxian just like he feels safe around Lan Wangji! That is stupidly adorable.


• PSYCHO GOTH SMIRKFACE YOU BASTARD


• So Wei Wuxian did have Yin Iron, it’s just that there were five pieces instead of the four that everyone thought! I was right!!


• PSYCHO GOTH SMIRKFACE: *unleashes admittedly cool double-ended sword thing* LAN WANGJI: This will only take a moment, honey, go check on the kids


• Oh, Wei Wuxian... what insanely dangerous and self-sacrificing thing are you planning now?

Episode 38

• ANOTHER FLASHBACK


• I kind of want to see the road trip buddy comedy of Ghostbuster Fraser and the young ‘blind’ girl. Especially if Ghostbuster Ray shows up too.


• People ship Ghostbuster Fraser and Psycho Goth Smirkface, don’t they


• Daaamn, the fake blind girl has serious moxie – she really faked Psycho Goth Smirkface out and made him think she’d walk straight into his sword!


• If he weren’t evil and annoying, Psycho Goth Smirkface threatening people with knives so they’ll agree to sell an oblivious Ghostbuster Fraser vegetables would be hilariously sweet


• Ohhh no, oh no – has Psycho Goth Smirkface been tricking Ghostbuster Fraser into killing innocent people? That’s a whole special level of awful.


• Wow. I really hate Psycho Goth Smirkface a lot. And this is a whole new set of tragedy. I thought we were doing hijinks!!


• Sidenote, this is why grown professionals should listen to teenage girls when they say “That is a bad guy and I don’t like him”


• Ohhh that’s Wei Wuxian’s ‘fuck shit up’ face again, go Wei Wuxian!


• I do not like this nails-in-skulls trick at all!!

Episode 39

• In a battle between a fully-powered Psycho Goth Smirkface’s sociopathy, and Wei Wuxian’s ability to psychoanalyse and talk, I back Wei Wuxian 100% of the time


• Oh my god Little Blind that was so fucking badass


• Jfc Psycho Goth Smirkface, die already


• Well that whole storyline was desperately sad. Even if Ghostbuster Ray does look cool with two swords.


• I’m not sure I entirely understood that business with the secret coffin and the glowing sword (blade?), but boy the background music was VERY EXCITED about it!


• Whoa. Whoa. Wait. Why is Lan Sizhui looking at toys that A-Yuan used to play with and looking all confused...?


• Lan Big Bro looks so upset about Nie Angry Sword’s death ;__;


• Ohhhhhh they all know who the bad guy is and Lan Big Bro does NOT like it


• LAN WANGJI THAT WAS AN ACTUAL EYEROLL


• AAAAAAH LAN BIG BRO RECOGNIZED WEI WUXIAN TOO that was amazing. And he wasn’t a dick about it. Ilu Lan Big Bro you deserve nice things.


• This series has such complicated things to say about betrayal

Episode 40

• The baby cultivators crack me up so hard omg. Who are the ones in red, though?? That’s a Wen color – I would have thought that people would shy away from Wen colors, even 16 years later.


• Well this little trip is just going to be full of issues for everyone, now isn’t it


• What does Wen Ning do in between cameos? Where does he go? It seems awfully lonely for him.


• Oh, Meng kid for sure just recognized Wei Wuxian on the spot


• Whoooooooa, Meng Kid’s the Jin Clan Leader?? Oh, he’s definitely the bad guy.


• Oh wow... everyone thinks Wei Wuxian is the crazy ex-Jin student, so they’re all reacting to him pretty much the way they reacted to him in the past as the Yiling Patriarch (except without the pants-wetting terror). Yeah, this isn’t going to cause any angst at all. But I guess at least Meng Kid didn’t actually recognize him.

Yes! He should be! He is the best teacher, and very approachable, too. They'd actually feel safe coming to him with problems and questions.

He's actually so good with kids in general?? I don't know if it's the way the character is written or if WWX's actor is also magic with kids, but all his interactions with A-Yuan are spot-on too. I'm a professional children's librarian and I wish I was that good with teenagers!

Hmm, good question - I think it must be both, that the character is written to be good with kids, and the actor can portray that so convincingly because he actually is. :-)

Though, granted, his group of teenagers are the easy mode version - a flight* of Lans (who are well-trained to be respectful to their elders, and follow the voice of authority obediently), and Jin Ling (who seems to immediately buckle in the face of a person of authority who doesn't treat him with derision and/or shout at him).

That is for sure true! I get the feeling that he'd cope pretty well with difficult ones, too, but it is certainly to his advantage that his baby cultivators are essentially teenaged ducklings who imprint on him.

Ohhhhh, that makes sense! And Zizhen does seem cool. I really love all the teenagers on this show, actually! I kind of want to see the next generation's adventures too... as long as it's mostly teenage drama and wacky hijinks and very little soul-crushing tragedy. :D
