The Untamed, Episodes 6-10

Two weeks and $80 of computer repairs later, I am back with more... can I really call these recaps if I'm not actually trying to tell people what's happening in the episode?


Episode 6

• Okay, Wei Wuxian taking control of Lan Wangji and making him drink wine is a little creepy


• I like that Wei Wuxian is mischievous like his mother. Lan Big Bro clearly likes it too. Lan Wangji, when he wakes up with a hangover, maybe not so much...


• I feel like I was probably told at some point what the Yin Iron is, but I sure do not remember it now


• Bonding in a hot spring WHAAAAAAT


• Well that bonding did not turn out how anybody expected, not least because the water was cold!


• ... Bunnies???


• Well that whole 'nobody touches the headband' thing lasted a real long time, Lan Wangji you softy


• Ugh, who is Jin Trust Fund Baby trying to fool with all his Romantic Hero crap


• Well, I wanted to know what the Yin Iron was! Lan Female Clan Leader is interesting, I like her.

Episode 7

• I still feel a little unclear about what the Yin Iron actually is, but I am accepting that it is a Plot Device and will probably do whatever is necessary to drive the story and is thus impossible to truly understand.


• Lan Wangji's stinkface when Wei Wuxian makes himself part of the noble quest was hilarious


• It's a really good thing that Wei Wuxian is around to lie on Lan Wangji's behalf.


• And to lie on Lan Wangji. OOOOOOOOOOOH! *winky face*


• Aww, Whatsisbro is all jealous that Wei Wuxian is buds with Lan Wangji.


• I think Lan Wangji just caught a feeling.


• BUNNY LANTERN


• Oh hell, everybody caught feelings during that scene.


• JIN TRUST FUND BABY YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE SIR punch him again Wei Wuxian you're doing great sweetie


• I like Clan Leader Jiang he seems like a moderately reasonable human.


• ...the bunnies are totally a thing, aren't they.

Episode 8

• YES WEI WUXIAN GO GET YOUR BOYFRIEND


• Nice try, Psycho Goth Prince, but Lan Big Bro is 10,000% more awesome than you on his worst day without even trying


• The smoke raven special effects are pretty cool


• Um. The Nie kid is not necessarily the first one I would trust with the WHOLE STORY of the ULTRA TOP SECRET MISSION they're on. He is, and I say this with affection, spectacularly useless.


• I am very curious about Goth Girl's backstory. Also, I hope that at some point she gets to punch Psycho Goth Prince in the genitals.


• Hey that's the dancing murder statue from the beginning!


• GOTH GIRL YOU ARE SUCH A SMARTIE! That whole picking a fight and whispering clues to Whatsisbro was masterfully done!


• Between the creepy murder mansion and the obviously cursed dancing murder statue cave, it is painfully clear that none of these boys have watched enough horror movies to respond appropriately to the blatant trope use happening all around them.


• It is perhaps important for me to remember that at this point in the story, even though they look like adults, these characters are supposed to be dumbass teenagers with magic powers. Also hey look there are zombies attacking now too.


• Yes, Nie kid, it is a fucking trap. Omg.

Episode 9

• Goth Girl is the whistle-playing MVP of my heart


• Whatsisbro hiding behind the statue until the danger was gone and then using a spooky voice to freak out the gang was such a sibling move


• The whole sequence of them fighting back-to-back in the mist with their eyes closed is pretty cool, ngl


• Wei Wuxian you smarty-pants, good job being bait! The real question is: did Lan Wangji realise it was an act before he tried his rescue...?


• GOTH GIRL BACKSTORY YESSSS


• I love how sideways smart Wei Wuxian is


• Goth Girl and Whatsisbro, sitting in a tree-ee...


• Is it normal to ship Goth Girl and Flashback Girl (I need a better name for her) even though they barely have any screentime together? It's just, let's be real, neither Jin Trust Fund Baby nor Whatsisbro are anywhere near cool enough to be proper matches for them and it is the obvious solution.


• (HOLD UP Goth Girl totally did some doctoring for Flashback Girl while they were at Ghostbuster Sleepaway Camp, this ship has substance, people!)


• I like how their strategy for accomplishing their mission is basically 'wander around and wait for weird shit to happen'.


• Oh heck yes overwhelming mystic vision stuff happening to the stoic character, thank u world

Episode 10

• Oh look another horror-movie murder castle. They really are the Ghostbusters.


• Okay, so now we've got Psycho Goth Smirkface and... I don't really know what to do with this new kid, but he seems like a cultivator cop who always gets his man (maybe) so now he's Ghostbuster Benton Fraser.


• Who the crap is this new guy?? Jesus Christ. Okay, the personality doesn't fit but I'm committed to the theme now, so he's Ghostbuster Ray.


• I have a bad feeling about this whole situation.


• I am SO CURIOUS about Wei Wuxian's mom. At least I think it's his mom whose name keeps popping up. I might have lost track somewhere along the way.


• I mean, is she dead? Or is she just... off doing... things?


• Ah, yes, the Unclean Realm. I bet only good things happen here.


• There are a lot of complicated emotions going around here and I'm not sure whether I trust the Meng kid or not.


• I mean, the jerk guard captain was kind of asking for a sword in the organs, but there seemed to be a lot of potentially significant undercurrents happening between Meng Kid and Psycho Goth Smirkface and I don't think it would be unreasonable to assume there were some conniving shenanigans going on here.


• EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN THE FIRE GOTH NATION ATTACKED


• I don't want Wei Wuxian to go to Dixing Hell, I want him to go camping with Lan Wangji some more.

Yeah. I guess WWX realised the he messed up when LWJ got punished for something he didn't do of his own free will, because WWX never does that to him again.

Your commentary is funny as hell to me, I'm sitting here giggling, trying to decide if and what I should reply to. Also, Psycho Goth Smirkface is such a good name for him!

General rule: any character that gets introduced by name is not a one-time appearance (even if you might wish so in some cases), and you'll have time and opportunity to learn more about them later.

That's a good rule to know! And I'm glad to hear that WWX doesn't make the same mistake again - it was a little vaillain-y, frankly.

I'm glad my commentary continues to amuse. :D I'm definitely looking forward to the point when I can come back to these early episodes and go "Wait a minute..."

More than just a little. Honestly, I find "school days" Wei Wuxian pretty unpleasant a lot of the time. Thankfully he gets better.

Okay, so now we've got Psycho Goth Smirkface and... I don't really know what to do with this new kid, but he seems like a cultivator cop who always gets his man (maybe) so now he's Ghostbuster Benton Fraser.

I'm glad he does get better! I definitely enjoyed him in the first few episodes, when he was... mid-character development? Later character development? Somewhere later in the storyline? I don't really know at this point. :D
