Guardian Episode Guide

So I was watching Guardian, as you do, and decided that since none of the episodes had titles* it would be a good idea for me to make a quick word doc of what happens in each episode so I could go back and rewatch things at my leisure.

And then it… morphed. And grew. And got a little sarcastic.

*It turns out the episodes do have titles, I just didn’t know it, and they are AMAZING TITLES, and you can find them here.



(n.b.: A lot of these time stamps are rounded up or down, because my media player was being weird on me. Also, the point of picking out particular scenes was so I could go back and watch favorites later, not to give a comprehensive outline, so… randomness! *jazzhands*)

Episode 1: First episode. Beginning of Li Qian/sundial arc.

• First meeting of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan (15:00)


• First meeting of Shen Wei and Da Qing (19:30)


• Shen Wei remembers meeting Kun Lun (26:20)


• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan have loaded conversation (32:00)


• Lead up (35:30) First appearance of the Black Cloak Envoy (40:00)

Episode 2: Li Qian tries to commit suicide. Zhao Yunlan tries to feel out Shen Wei (har har).

• First time Shen Wei goes Envoy in plainclothes (20:00)

Episode 3: Rape revenge plotline.

• Everyone at school loves Shen Wei (4:00)


• Zhao Yunlan sneezes all over Shen Wei’s fishtank and eats his cake (8:00)


• Rogue attacks Shen Wei and he saves the teacher (29:30)


• Shen Wei gets caught at the scene of the next crime (41:00)

Episode 4: Face-stealing plotline begins.

• Shen Wei is interrogated (2:50)


• Shen Wei butts in on the case and is attacked (10:30)


• Zhao Yunlan gets suspicious of Shen Wei (15:45)


• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei have a nighttime stroll (19:45)

Episode 5: Water murder episode. Shen Wei moves in across the hall. Start of mirror girl plot.

Episode 6: Mirror girl plot. Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan investigate Shen Wei.

• Shen Wei gets mugged (40:30)

Episode 7: Start of horror writer plot.

• Shen Wei gets mugged cont’d (2:00)


• The team catches Zhao Yunlan’s rescue on surveillance (11:00)

Episode 8: Start of awl plot

• Zhao Yunlan tries to flirt with old books (7:20)

Episode 9: The teams head to the mountains

• Zhao Yunlan finds Shen Wei broken down on the way (9:30)


• Zhao Yunlan uses Shen Wei as a pillow again (18:00)

Episode 10: Wang Zheng captured. Lots of backstory.

• Black Cloak kills monsters for Zhao Yunlan (22:00)


• Zhao Yunlan and Black Cloak have a moment (41:30)

Episode 11: More Wang Zheng backstory. Conclusion of awl plot, start of hypsnotist little girl plot.

• Shen Wei gets drunk (16:00)


• Shen Wei hypnotizes Zhu Hong and worries his secret is out (19:40)


• Zhao Yunlan figures out who Shen Wei is (31:50)

Episode 12: Hypnotist little girl. Guo captured by the snake tribe. Little girl controls Da Qing and steals hallows.

• Zhao Yunlan tries to get Shen Wei to tell him his identity (4:40)


• Shen Wei catches Zhao Yunlan during a fight (9:30)


• Shen Wei in tank top (14:10)

Episode 13: Hypnotist little girl. Reporter guy starts digging into the SID.

• Shen Wei interrupts wedding mob scene (6:40)


• Zhao Yunlan tries to get Shen Wei to tell him the truth (11:00)


• Zhao Yunlan/Shen Wei ‘I thought you were my friend’ confrontation (16:00)


• Mind-controlled Zhao Yunlan invasion of SID (26:00)

Episode 14: Conclusion of mind control plot. Stealth first appearance of paintbrush. Start of secret lab stuff. Reporter plotline kicks into gear.

• Zhao Yunlan talks to Shen Wei about the deception (~7)


• ‘Morning after’ car singing (14:50)


• Shen Wei writes Zhao Yunlan’s apology letter in calligraphy because of course he does (17:50)


• Zhao Yunlan introduces Shen Wei to the family, feeds him street food (40:20)

Episode 15: Zhao Yunlan changes his hairstyle for no reason whatsoever, no, definitely not. Reporter guy gets video of Shen Wei in action and uses it for blackmail. Creepy Regent guy shows up topside. Surprise!Old Zhao inspection.

• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei both try to take the blame (6:00)


• Zhao Yunlan barters Shen Wei’s gratitude into housekeeping (13:40)


• Shen Wei deals with Regent (25:50)


• Zhao Yunlan’s first trip to Dixing (34:20)

Episode 16: The grandkids don’t like Old Zhao’s leadership style. Zhao Yunlan spends 45 minutes getting into fights with Dixingren. Return of old water guy.

Episode 17: Search for book in Dixing. Conclusion of Old Zhao visit plot. Blue haired bad guy backstory. Zhao Yunlan comes across the book about Kun Lun.

• Shen Wei makes a bar full of Dixingren wet themselves (5:50)


• Shen Wei makes three street toughs wet themselves (11:30)


• Shen Wei makes the guy who stabbed Zhao Yunlan wet himself (20:40)


• Everyone at school loves Shen Wei part two (37:00)

Episode 18: Chu and Guo investigate a cage fighting ring. First appearance of fire guy.

• Shen Wei tells Zhao Yunlan he’d planted Chu as a spy (7:00)


• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei use a hostage negotiation as an opportunity to discuss Dixing educational reform (31:50)

Episode 19: Chu and Guo get captured. Blue haired bad guy finally gets his ass kicked.

• Shen Wei reacts really calmly to Zhao Yunlan using the hallows again (11:00)


• Shen Wei and Zhu Hong talk about love and Shen Wei pretends he hasn’t been carrying a torch for Zhao Yunlan for 10,000 years (18:40)


• Chu and Guo have to huddle together for warmth because this is Due South 1994 (35:00)


• The long overdue ass-kicking (37:40)

Episode 20: First showdown with pillar prisoner guy. Blue hair dies. Zhao Yunlan goes blind.

• Reunion Night dinner (18:20)


• Zhao Yunlan has a vision but most impotantly pats Shen Wei on the knee (25:30)


• Zhao Yunlan confronts Ye Zun (33:40) and has to be rescued like the damsel he is (38:10)

Episode 21: The team tries a couple of things to fix Zhao Yunlan’s blindness. Start of miracle doctor plot. Zhao Yunlan learns the name Kun Lun. Shen Wei manhandles Zhao Yunlan a lot.

• Zhao Yunlan knows Shen Wei’s schedule better than he does and Doctor Chen ships it hard (3:20)


• Zhao Yunlan tries to play in traffic and Shen Wei is not amused (18:00)


• Shen Wei fusses over Zhao Yunlan and gets a blast from the past (20:10)


• Zhao Yunlan calls Shen Wei ‘Xiao Wei’ and breaks his brain (30:40)


• The team reveals they know who Shen Wei is (37:30)

Episode 22: Miracle doctor story. Zhao Yunlan’s blindness is fixed with the sundial. The paintbrush shows up. The cat gets some memories back. They return to Dixing.

• Shen Wei kneeling in the rain (6:30)


• Zhao Yunlan gives up his eyesight for justice (23:00)


• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan sundial moment from opening (32:30)

Episode 23: Being king is the worst job in all of Dixing. SID gets a letter from the paintbrush holder.

• Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing talk about whether to trust Shen Wei (7:50)


• Shen Wei and Da Qing make a pinky promise (9:20)


• CSI: Dixing (19:40)


• Zhao Yunlan finds out what Shen Wei did to heal his blindness (34:30)

Episode 24: Zhao Yunlan gets stuck in a real life video game.

• Zhao Yunlan is taking Shen Wei’s use of the sundial really calmly (2:00)


• Zhao Yunlan defuses a bomb while Shen Wei is holding it because this is Due South 1994 (29:30)


• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are good at consoling people (38:40)

Episode 25: Split personality episode

• Shen Wei is uninterested in roleplay (14:40)


• Zhao Yunlan copes by yelling at things (17:20)

Episode 26: Daqing gets a girlfriend and his memories back.

• Shen Wei watches Zhao Yunlan sleep (5:40)


• Shen Wei accidentally straight up kills a girl wtf (21:30)


• Shen Wei and Daqing moment (25:50)

Episode 27: A lot about Lin Jing’s and electric girl’s relationship. They catch her.

• Old Zhao knooooooows (31:20)


• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei “I trusted you again wtf dude MORE secrets?” moment (33:40)

Episode 28: Paintbrush plot starts to pick up speed. Electric girl’s past.

• Shen Wei catches Zhao Yunlan when he falls off the table (25:40)


• Shen Wei watches Zhao Yunlan sleep again. (32:10)


• Zhao Yunlan notices Shen Wei isn’t healing immediately any more. (38:50)

Episode 29: End of paintbrush storyline. Pillar is opened and badguy is almost free. Old water guy gets killed. Shen Wei heads back to Dixing.

• Shen Wei’s inability to use modern phone technology becomes an asset (3:20)


• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan shoulder touch moment from opening (34:10)

Episode 30: Dixing Palace is overrun. SID’s information is leaked. Zhao Yunlan fires Lin Jing. Zhao Yunlan holds his dad at gunpoint.

• Shen Wei has to pass romantic messages on for Lin Jing (3:30)


• Shen Wei fights in the palace and is injured (18:40)


• Shen Wei is captured. (24:40)


• Zhao Yunlan pines for his bf (38:00)

Episode 31: Zhu is attacked. Zhao Yunlan dreamwalks with her. The government tries to shut SID down.

• Poor Zhu Hong tries to confess her love but Zhao Yunlan is preoccupied with Shen Wei (10:20)


• The Supervisory Department encounters the immovable object that is Chu (27:00)


• Shen Wei being swoony tied to a pillar. (29:00)

Episode 32: Chu and Guo go down to Dixing looking for Shen Wei. Lots of Chu backstory. Or maybe it was all a dream.

• Zhao Yunlan yells at his boss (7:20)


• Chu asks to go rescue Shen Wei (11:30)


• Shen Wei being swoony tied to a pillar. (4:00, 24:40)

Episode 33: More Chu dream stuff. Guo is dead! But then not. Shen Wei finally rescued. Chu uses the sundial on Guo.

• Shen Wei defies his brother (21:50)


• Zhao Yunlan rescues Shen Wei (26:30)


• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan have a nice moment on a bench (32:20)

Episode 34: Arrest warrants are issued for SID. Ye Zun invades the SID. Zhao Yunlan gets sent to the past.

• Ye Zun makes his big entrance at the SID (19:10)


• Young Shen Wei meets Zhao Yunlan, totally leaves him hanging (27:10)


• Young Shen Wei meets Kun Lun, does not know what to do with the blatant leering (35:50)


• The lollipop that launched 10,000 years of pining (38:30)

Episode 35: Zhao Yunlan ends up in the past. Shen Wei’s backstory.

• Kun Lun gives Shen Wei his name (2:00)


• Kun Lun is Shen Wei’s first friend and we all cry (11:10)


• Brother versus brother, aka Ye Zun take a chill pill (17:20)


• Old!Shen Wei shows up (21:10)

Episode 36: They return from the past. Ye Zun makes moves on Earth. Li Qian continues to be awesome so they get the Hallows back. Guo gets injected with serum. Lin Jing gets snorted.

• Ye Zun and his pimp cane versus the Supervisory Department (2:50)


• Zhao Yunlan addresses the nation, Shen Wei has hearteyes (11:10)


• Chu remembers being rescued by the Envoy (26:40)

Episode 37: The team splits up to look for the wick for the lantern. Zhu Hong is elected leader of the Yashou tribe. Guo starts using his superpower.

• The final team meeting *sob* (8:40)


• Shen Wei coughs blood opening the portal (16:00)


• Shen Wei is captured (41:40)

Episode 38: Zhao Yunlan and Guo go to Dixing for Shen Wei/the lantern’s wick. Shen Wei is beaten up a bunch. Guo gets possessed by Ye Zun.

• Guo motivates the troops (5:00)


• Shen Wei gets beaten up a bunch and is swoony tied to a pillar. (14:20)


• Creepy Regent tries ‘I’m just following orders’, Shen Wei is too busy dream-talking to Zhao Yunlan for that shit (21:20)


• Li Qian continues to be awesome (25:50)


• Even beaten to hell Shen Wei is still rescuing damsels (28:10)


• Shen Wei throws himself in front of Zhao Yunlan to take a hit. (38:00)

Episode 39: The invasion of Haixing continues. Catgirl gets choked a little bit and dies after a five-minute monologue. Zhao Yunlan escapes. SID invades Dixing. Creepy Regent and King get snorted. The bartender leads a Dixing rebellion.

• Shen Wei takes the hit cont’d, Zhao Yunlan breaks all our hearts, Ye Zun can die in a fire (2:00)


• Shen Wei is absorbed, Lin Jing wonders why it’s suddenly raining professors (4:40)


• Ye Zun tries to demoralize the world by torturing Zhao Yunlan on live TV, it does not go as planned (6:20)


• Ye Zun tries the booze approach to seduction, might have worked better if he hadn’t just apparently murdered the love of Zhao Yunlan’s life in front of him (11:10)


• Shen Wei shares the plan with Lin Jing (18:50)


• Ye Zun pitches a fit when he realizes everyone likes Shen Wei better and Zhao Yunlan gets his confession on national radio (28:00)


• Zhao Yunlan gets the Guardian Lantern to shoot Ye Zun in the head (33:50)


• SID arrives in the palace, Zhao Yunlan injects himself with serum (41:00)

Episode 40: Ye Zun starts devouring the world. Shen Wei’s plan comes to fruition. Dixing is relit. Epilogue.

• Zhao Yunlan Hulks out and stabs Ye Zun (~6:00)


• Lin Jing stabs Shen Wei for justice (8:10)


• Zhao Yunlan realizes what Shen Wei’s plan has been all along and we all cry (9:40)


• Ye Zun and Shen Wei FINALLY ACTUALLY TALK Jesus God (11:10)


• Zhao Yunlan finds out what’s been in Shen Wei’s necklace (15:30)


• Zhao Yunlan lights the lantern and we all cry (16:40)


• Little Guo starts dating and Old Chu reacts calmly (28:50)

This is so useful! Thank you very much for sharing these - I have a rewatch going where I wanted to take notes, but my notes are waaaay too long (and as a result I sometimes don't take notes at all because I am lazy), and this is much better as an overview.
