Author’s Notes: _The Virgin Spring_ is a haunting tale. One night I dreamt this version, and was able to write it down.

Reccer's Notes: Rubynye transposes Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of a medieval Swedish murder ballad into her beloved Bronze Age Crete; she gives this account of its creation in the comments:

I almost feel like I, my waking self, can't take credit -- I literally dreamt this, fortunately on a weekend so I could write it down, complete with the note about the refrain of "this they should not have done". I have loved the Minoans for a long time so it makes sense that my subconscious decided to retell the story there, as much sense as subconsciousnesses make anyway. The Minoans, with a different sense of morality and the universe, wouldn't ask "why did God let this happen" but would note how people in a society should and shouldn't behave (I think at least).

Dreamland delivered its gift to a formidably disciplined, well-read, and eloquent mind: the story begins with a classic fairytale riddle (whose answer will hinge upon a fluid definition of family) and is knit together by an insistent and anguished refrain; the author carefully avoids the film’s conflict of Christianity versus Norse religion in a setting where it would make no sense, furnishes researched hit-and-run cultural color (a traveler gifts her benefactors with the exotic delicacy of…stone-baked wheat flatbread!), and spares an innocent whose fate in movie canon was undeserved—allowing a family to be (though not restored) renewed.

"Who's playin God here, huh? You wave the fucking God laws at me while you got Fraser strapped to a table somewhere so you can put his fucking brains in a blender and take what he is? Look in a fucking mirror, lady."
"For some reason I can't fathom, Mr. Kowalski, I like you, so I'm going to give you a piece of advice." Her chin came up. "You might watch your words. Unless you want to join Fraser on charges of sedition."
"What?" Vecchio was incredulous. "You're yankin me, right? Fraser’s a kitchen appliance, but he's man enough to be brought up on charges? How the Jee does that compute?"

A sequel to Real Boys:
Three years raising sheep on Clementine, and it all comes crashing down in a skip storm, some consequential psychosis, a kidnapping and a global catastrophe. He may be the universe's punching bag, but Ray will fight for freak love. He's getting Fraser back, God Laws be damned.

Reccer's Notes: There are very few AUs that put the due South characters into spaaace! This is a fusion with the Bladerunner universe where Fraser's an android looking for the killers of his AI father and partners up with Ray Kowalski, a futuristic but very recognisable CPD cop. Salieri's a marvelous writer who takes aspects of the Bladerunner universe and expands on them with extraordinary worldbuilding to tell a complex and riveting tale. There's a gradually developing relationship between Ray and Fraser, nefarious villains, and anti-android laws that wrench the boys apart so that both Rays have to fight to get Fraser back. A triumph, and a due South classic. Here's a quote from a comment by Moth: "The other day I was talking to a friend about Philip K. Dick adaptations and I said that it was funny how one of the best adaptations out there was a due South fanfic. So I went and searched for it to see if it lived up to my memories and it actually exceeded them. This is the best type of AU, one that transplants the canon characters, storylines, and themes to a new universe, while also commenting on the both the canon as well as the nature of fiction." It's also a bloody good read!

Summary
Shen Wei talks to Teacher Zhang Ruonan, who's nervous and off her game lately. At the SID, Zhao Yunlan is sneezing everywhere and also the only one who can make the Dial react. Their latest murder victim is a student who looks like an old man. Zhao Yunlan sneezes all over Shen Wei's office and eats his cake; Shen Wei is unimpressed. Teacher Zhang comes in, and Zhao Yunlan introduces himself as "Professor Shen's............. good friend." Zhao Yunlan and Xiao Guo go to the hospital for cold medicine and see Wang Yike. Lao Chu interviews the murder victim's roommate and then leaves him for Da Qing to tail, but Da Qing falls asleep on his stakeout. Zhao Yunlan has the first of many late-night visits to Shen Wei's office. ♥! The roommate is also murdered, and Xiao Guo faints at the crime scene. Zhao Yunlan sees Teacher Zhang among the onlookers, follows her, and connects her with Wang Yike and the murder victims. Teacher Zhang explains her backstory. Zhao Yunlan leaves her in the care of the class rep.

I never noticed before that at the very start of the episode Shen Wei is studying the SID file. He puts it away and picks up some other papers as Teacher Zhang comes in.

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or quote from the first half of episode 3? Is Zhao Yunlan's sneezing purely Hallows-related, or does he actually have a cold (perhaps due to a Hallows-weakened immune system)? Does Shen Wei seem grumpy to you, and if so, why do you think that is? What's the main reason he hesitates when introducing Zhao Yunlan to Teacher Zhang: because Zhao Yunlan looks so disreputable, because the SID is conducting a covert investigation, because publicly associating with the SID is bad for his career, because he genuinely doesn't have a word to describe his relationship with Zhao Yunlan, or some other reason? And what does Xiao Guo think is going on with the introduction? What's the most suspicious thing about Wang Yike at the hospital? How much do you blame Da Qing for falling asleep on his stakeout? What is Shen Wei referring to when he says, "Many tragedies were destined from the beginning"?

Somewhere out there in a Chinese convenience store cooler is an oreo-topped cornetto with chocolate flavor inside, an example of false advertising.

After being thrown off by the second-rate kornetto, Wen Chao, in a place where other cornetto fears to be dumped in - the public park trash can- Wei Wuxian learns a forbidden cultivation, the power to recycle discarded and melted cornettos.

With an army of broken wafer cones, torn cornetto wrappers and puddles of melted ice cream, Wei Wuxian makes a name for himself as the Founder of Recycled Cornettos.

Watch him as he calls on all the discarded cornettos to exact revenge on the Wens.

Reccer's Notes: The atrocities of the Sunshot Campaign…if everyone were sapient Cornettos. (Presumably inspired by the donghua’s jarring and anachronistic injections of Product Placement into the narrative, which became a running gag among the fandom.)

I’ve tagged this as Humor, because some readers will receive it thus, but there’s a quote by

glorious-spoon on Tumblr that I think summarizes my own reaction:

i don't usually go for crack fic, but there's something really beautiful about fic that takes a cracky premise and plays it utterly straight, to the point of genuine human pathos that's only enhanced by the sheer ridiculousness of what's actually happening

Reccer's Notes: Hilda in 2020 is a rural lifestyle vlogger, addressing her audience from COVID quarantine and coping with lockdown in her characteristic down-home resourceful fashion (chaining canon illustrations into a storyline.)

The modernized context turns her repurposable-as-clothing floursacks into a vintage estate artifact, rhyming two historical periods of struggle and make-do as she renders them into masks. In the course of her expositions on things like feral cat rescue and wafflemaking, she casually drops evidence of an impressive and wide-ranging education; this is a woman who, in her witty conversational folksiness, gladly learns and gladly teaches. (Wonder if she and Manly Wade Wellman’s John the Balladeer ever met?)

This Hilda lives in a community, though; as the quarantine grinds wearily on, she grows increasingly fretful in her seclusion, mounting the soapbox to rant about neighbors who refuse to mask or isolate (this is 2020, before vaccines became available), and the parasocial companionship of her audience becomes increasingly precious.

Oh, and Hilda shares a recipe for her hybrid sourdough/baking powder waffles, complete with considerate substitution suggestions for various dietary limitations. (“This batter keeps in the fridge for a couple days, allegedly. I’ve never managed to test it.”)
